As
part of the University of Illinois,
the College of Law is a state-supported public institution. That means
Illinois taxpayers underwrite part of the operating costs of the College
to keep students' tuition costs as affordable as possible. (Incidentally,
it was Abraham Lincoln who signed the Morrill Act, which provided for
the original 37 public land-grant institutions, including the
University of Illinois.)
In addition, Champaign-Urbana is consistently ranked among the most
affordable cities for its cost of living, so students' budgets buy more
than in an urban area. Admitted students may petition for residency in
the State of Illinois; residency is determined by the University's
Office of Admissions and Records.
Overall, students graduate from Illinois with less debt and smaller
monthly payments than at many other institutions. That translates into
greater financial flexibility and a wider range of career options.
