Vibrant and engaging, the twin cities of Champaign-Urbana are home to the
University of Illinois. Combining natural Midwestern beauty with cultural
resources typically found in larger metropolitan areas, Champaign-Urbana
retains the charm, safety, and affordability of smaller communities.
With a population of 100,000, Champaign-Urbana boasts a wide range of
restaurants,
shopping, coffee houses,
nightlife (including plenty of clubs
and live music venues), movie theaters, athletic facilities, galleries, and bookstores.
There's a nearby vineyard, orchard, miles of bicycle paths, and an award-winning
local transit service — free to students. Housing, entertainment, and living expenses
are comparatively low. Additional information about Champaign-Urbana is available
at the University of Illinois web site's Community page,
and you'll also find items of interest at the following sites:
A major center for the arts, the campus attracts dozens of nationally
and internationally renowned artists each year to its widely acclaimed
Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The University also supports
two major museums: the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion; and the
Spurlock Museum of world history and culture.
Outside of campus, Boardman's Art Theatre
offers cinema beyond the standard Hollywood fare while the
historic Virginia Theatre presents locally-produced musicals, a monthly film series,
live performances (from Ann Margret to Jim Brickman), and hosts UI alum and
Urbana native Roger Ebert's Annual Overlooked Film Festival.
Plus, you can experience Big Ten Conference action in nine men's and 10
women's sports.
Campus recreation facilities include playing fields and gyms; an ice arena; basketball,
tennis, squash, volleyball, and racquetball courts; swimming pools; indoor
running tracks, weight rooms; two 18-hole championship golf courses, and
an in-line skating rink. Bowling and billiards are available on campus at the Illini Union.
Nearby is the University's Allerton Park, a national natural landmark
featuring flood-plain forests, beautiful flower gardens, and an outstanding
collection of statuary from Asia and Europe.
Chicago, Indianapolis, and St. Louis are all less than three hours away by car.
The University's Willard Airport (flight code CMI) and Amtrak provide easy
access to destinations throughout the U.S.
