Legal Periodical Indexes

Introduction

Legal periodicals are an important secondary source of legal information. They are valuable in researching scholarly aspects of the law, recent developments in the law, and current legal trends.

Access to the legal periodical literature is available via print indexes located in the reference alcove, LegalTrac, and on both LEXIS and WESTLAW (please note that Lexis and Westlaw access is restricted to law school faculty and students per agreement with these services).

This guide will outline the major legal periodical indexes available and will provide information on the available formats (i.e. print, online) for each index. In addition, it will present details on particular advantages and/or features of each index and format.

Periodical locations can be found using either the online catalog or the journal list, copies of which are located on the table just outside the reference alcove and at the circulation desk. Please consult a member of the library staff if you have difficulty locating a particular periodical. Also, please note that the most recent issues of periodicals are kept on open reserve.

General U.S. Legal Indexes

Index to Legal Periodicals. 1908 -
Reference Alcove - Index Table

Index to Legal Periodicals (ILP) is a monthly paper index produced by the H.W. Wilson Company. It covers 460+ English language legal periodicals and books published in the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. A few yearbooks, annual reviews, and reports of annual institutes are included; however, it is still primarily a periodical index. The monthly paper issues are cumulated annually into a bound volume. ILP may be searched using the combined subject/author index. It also contains tables that can be used to locate articles dealing with a specific case or statute and a book review index.

Current Law Index. 1980 -
Reference Alcove - Index Table

Current Law Index (CLI) is a paper index of legal journals that is produced by Information Access Company (IAC). It is issued twelve times a year, with quarterly and annual cumulations. Coverage includes 875+ English language journals from the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. Titles covered include academic reviews, bar association journals, specialty journals, and selected journals treating allied disciplines such as criminology and accounting. CLI can be accessed by subject, author or title. In addition, it contains tables of cases and statutes cited in articles. CLI lacks the historical coverage of ILP, however, it covers a wider range of publications and newspapers than ILP. Also, it is useful to note that CLI uses the Library of Congress subject headings to index articles; these are much more specific than the index terms used by ILP. CLI is available online under the name Legal Resource Index on both Lexis (LAWREV library, LRI file) and Westlaw (LRI database). These online versions are searchable using either boolean operators or natural language queries. These search capabilities are especially useful if one is trying to locate articles that mention a specific term or name that might not be indexed in the print version. Also, the online Legal Resource Index allows for the combination of terms or concepts using the boolean AND operator. This capability is not possible in the print index. Coverage for the print and online versions is the same, even though the names are different.

IAC also produces the online legal periodical index LegalTrac, which is available from the law library webpage. LegalTrac takes the CLI database and adds coverage of additional publications. LegalTrac indexes approximately 900 legal publications. Also, it includes law-related articles from more than 1,000 additional business and general interest periodicals, as well as major legal publications from other English-speaking countries. LegalTrac provides easy subject or keyword searching, as well as more advanced boolean "power searching" for experienced users. As a web based service, LegalTrac is continuously updated.

Current Index to Legal Periodicals. 1977-
Reference Alcove - Index Table

Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP) is a weekly print service from the University of Washington Law School that indexes the contents of 175 major law reviews, including articles, comments, and case notes. Each week it indexes law reviews received the previous week. This service helps to fill the time lag in between receipt of ILP, CLI, and LegalTrac supplements and updates. The issues of CILP are not cumulative.

CILP is available online on Westlaw (CILP database). Coverage is of the current eight weeks. Again, the online advantages are the ability to combine concepts or terms with boolean connectors and the ability to search for specific terms or names that might not be indexed in the print version.

Index to Periodical Articles Related to Law. 1958-
K9.N323x - Reference Alcove

Index to Periodical Articles Related to Law is a quarterly paper index that covers English language periodicals which apply social and behavioral science to law and have research value, but which have not been indexed by Index to Legal Periodicals, Current Law Index, Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals, Legal Resource Index, or LegalTrac. The fall issue is an annual cumulation. Beginning with Volume 21, the periodicals indexed do not include any law journals or any other periodicals which are directly law-related, with the xception of newer periodicals not yet indexed elsewhere. Access is primarily through a broad subject index which uses Library of Congress subject headings. An author index refers the user to full bibliographic entries in the subject index. This index is not available on Lexis or Westlaw.

Indexes to Foreign Periodicals

Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals. 1960-
Reference Alcove - Index Table

Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals may be used to access articles, book reviews, collections of essays, biographies and festschriften from approximately 360 foreign language legal periodicals. Entries are in the original language, except that languages not using the Roman alphabet have been transliterated into that alphabet. Indexes include a subject index, author index, a geographical index, and a book review index. This index is not available on Lexis or Westlaw.

Index to Canadian Legal Periodical Literature. 1961-
K9.N313x - Reference Alcove

This quarterly paper index may be used to access approximately 84 Canadian legal journals from 1961 to the present. Each issue cumulates material from the previous issues that year; the fourth issue is a bound volume. Access is to both the civil and common systems of law in Canada. Indexes include a subject index, an author and title index, a table of cases, and a book review index. This index is not available on Lexis or Westlaw.

Legal Journals Index. 1986-
K33.L45 - Reference Alcove

This paper index covers all journal titles published in the United Kingdom that are devoted to law or frequently contain articles on legal topics. Monthly issues are cumulated quarterly and there is also an annual bound cumulation. Separate subject, author, case, legislation, and book review indexes are provided. This index is not available on Lexis or Westlaw.

Special Subject Legal Indexes

Index to Federal Tax Articles. 1975-
KF6271.G64 - Reference Alcove

This paper index provides access to the literature on federal income, estate, and gift taxation. Articles indexed appear in legal, tax, economic, and non-periodical publications. Proceedings of major tax institutes are also included. The service includes an author and subject index. The obvious advantage of this index over the more general legal periodical indexes for tax researchers is the greater breadth of publications and publication types included in this index.

CCH Federal Tax Articles.
KF6335.A6C57x - Reference Alcove

Commerce Clearing House (CCH) publishes this monthly looseleaf reporter which provides access to citations and abstracts of articles on federal income, estate, gift, and excise taxation appearing in legal, accounting, and business periodicals. Proceedings and papers from major tax institutes are also noted. Contents are arranged by Internal Revenue Code section numbers, but citations may also be located using the index to topics and the index to authors.

Full Text Legal Publications on Lexis and Westlaw

Please note that access to Lexis and Westlaw is limited to law school faculty and students per agreements with these companies.

LEXIS

The LAWREV library on the Lexis-Nexis service currently consists of the full text of 200+ law reviews, several American Bar Association (ABA) publications and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) periodicals, Environmental Law Institute publications, American Law Reports (ALR) annotations and Lawyers' Edition 2nd Series (L.Ed.2d) articles, and a number of Warren Gorham & Lamont tax journals. This library also contains the Legal Resource Index file discussed above. The present focus of the LAWREV library concentrates on both state and national issues of legal significance.

WESTLAW

Westlaw has several legal text and periodical full text databases. These include the JLR database which contains the journals and law reviews; the TEXTS database which contains legal texts and treatises; and the AMBAR-TP database which contains American Bar Association journals. All three databases can be searched simultaneously using the TP-ALL database. As mentioned previously, the Legal Resource Index is also available on Westlaw.
