Most of the material in the Law Library is arranged by Library
of Congress Classification Scheme in these broad subject areas:
- federal and state legal materials
- general materials
- foreign legal materials including: English, Canadian, French,
German, and European Union
Under the Library of Congress classification scheme, books are arranged
by subject. Within the classification of legal materials, the books are
arranged first by jurisdiction and then by subject. Classifications for
the various Anglo-American jurisdictions share common traits, as do classifications
for civil law countries.
Some of the materials for European countries and for Latin American countries
have been classified by the Library of Congress classification, but the majority
of these materials are still under the old shelving schemes devised by the
Library before Library of Congress numbers were available. Both Library of
Congress classified materials and internally classified materials for these
countries are arranged by country in compact stacks (lower level); within
each country materials are subarranged first by the old shelving system and
then by the Library of Congress system.
The general outline of the Library
of Congress Classification Scheme appears below.
You will find the following location designations
for law materials in the online catalog:
- Law (open shelves)
- Law Compact Stacks (lower level)
- Law Reference [non-circulating]
NOTE: Most of the call number locationsbelow are only
for books with an online catalog location designation of Law. If you
cannot locate a book, please check the online catalog location designation.

Several other discrete collections are arranged by different classification
schemes. Descriptions are available of the documents and foreign law collections.
To locate materials in the Law Library, you may need to consult three
sources: the online catalog and two card catalogs as follows:
For most people, the best way to start is to use one of the public
terminals on the main floor immediately to your left as you enter the reading
room or the public terminal on the lower level near the microforms room.
Follow the menu instructions, which are self-explanatory. The online
catalog will help you locate materials within the Law Library, within
other libraries at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and
within sixty-four other libraries across the state of Illinois.
You will find the following location designations for law materials
in the online catalog:
- Law (Open Stacks)
- Law Compact Stacks (Lower Level)
- Law Reference (Non-circulating)
Note: Foreign country materials (except the United Kingdom, Ireland,
and Canada) are in the compact stacks although theonline catalog location
designation may be Law.
For more sophisticated searches on the online catalog, or for help with the
online catalog, consult a reference librarian.
Not all the materials in the Law Library are listed in the online
catalog. If you cannot find what you want online, try the two card catalogs
on the main floor along the north wall in the stacks.
The Anglo-American card catalog is a unified alphabetical catalog;
that is, cards for authors, titles, and subjects are filed inone alphabet. Anglo-American
titles cataloged before October 1, 1984, some state and federal documents,
and some foreign law, international law, comparative law, and British Commonwealth
titles are included. This is a "frozen" catalog in that no catalog cards
have been added since October1, 1984.
The foreign law card catalog is a split catalog; that is, authors
and titles are filed in one alphabet and topical subjects are filed in a
second alphabet. This catalog is slowly being replaced or supplemented by
the online catalog. This catalog is now of little use and should be consulted
only as a last resort. There are no call numbers in this catalog, and you
will need to ask for help in actually locating a specific title.
