Keep in mind that there are a plethora of databases
available for free on the web. Many of these are provided as services of our
government. An example of such a site is the Illinois Secretary of State
Corporations/LLC information search page which can found here.
While you might not use this site specifically for this class, keep in mind that
you will when you begin practicing. While others waste the firm's money
performing the same search in Lexis or Westlaw, you save money by performing
free searches due to your awareness of the availability.
Note the ease in searching this site. You have the option of searching
for a corporation, LLC, or both. You also have the option of searching by name
or by file number. In fact, you can even search by key word if need be.
Another positive aspect of sites such as this is that they normally are
well indexed and searching them is quick as well as easy. For example, I
performed a search of Illinois' Coporations/LLC using the search term JFK. The
results of that search are shown below.
