While attending the College of Law, John Nowak was Editor-in-Chief of the Illinois Law Forum, graduating with honors and Order of the Coif. He clerked for Justice Walter V. Schaefer of the Illinois Supreme Court.

During his teaching career, Professor Nowak received the Outstanding Professor Award three times from the College of Law. He briefly served as the Deputy Chancellor for Athletics and was the University of Illinois’ faculty athletic representative to the Big Ten Conference and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for several years. From 1987-90, he served on the NCAA Committee on Infractions.

Professor Nowak has written numerous articles on constitutional law topics and is the co-author, with Professor Ronald Rotunda, of both a single-volume and multi-volume reference works on constitutional law. In addition to numerous guest lectures and presentations, Professor Nowak has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan and served as the Lee Distinguished Visiting Professor at the College of William & Mary.

He is a member of the American Law Institute and a past chair of several committees of the Association of American Law Schools. Professor Nowak has served as the Reporter on the Speedy Trial Act Planning Groups for the United States District Courts in Illinois, and as a Reporter for the National Center for State Courts’ Task Force on Courts in the American System of Government. He has also been a member of the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Jury Instructions on Criminal Cases.
