Professor Burkstrand-Reid joined the faculty of the College of Law as a Visiting Assistant Professor in fall 2008, having previously taught Family Law and Sex-Based Discrimination Law as an adjunct professor at the American University Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C. She is a former associate with the D.C. office of Crowell & Moring LLP, where her practice included torts, products liability, First Amendment and terrorism-related work.  She also maintained an active pro bono family law and sex-equity practice.

In 2005, Professor Burkstrand-Reid was awarded a Women's Law and Public Policy Fellowship affiliated with Georgetown University. Her primary research interests include family law and women's reproductive health.  Her piece, The Invisible Woman: Availability and Culpability in Reproductive Health Jurisprudence, is forthcoming in the Colorado Law Review.  Professor Burkstrand-Reid's current scholarship focuses on the evolution of the law governing contracts between spouses.

Before entering law school, Professor Burkstrand-Reid was a journalist, reporting for newspapers including The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal.  She received her J.D. summa cum laude from American University and her B.A. in political science from Emory University. Upon graduation from law school, she clerked for the judges of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Alexandria Division, where she handled pro se and criminal matters.
