Campus Services

General Information

The Information Desk is located on the north side of the Illini Union's first floor. Directory Assistance for student, faculty and staff phone numbers is 333-1000.

Computer Facilities

Besides the College of Law computer facility, you can use other computer sites. Some of the nearest computer facilities for law students include:

  • Law School Computer Room (Room 045)
  • Law Library (Room 145)
  • Wohlers Hall, Gregory and 6th (Room 70)
  • Illini Union, 1401 W. Green (Basement)
  • Undergraduate Library, 1402 W. Gregory

Transportation

Champaign-Urbana has an extensive bus system that is free to all University of Illinois students called Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit. Check their website at cumtd.com for more information on routes, schedules, bike policies, local weather, etc.

Safety

Motorist Assistance — Call 244-HELP (244-4357). At your request, the Division of Campus Parking will dispatch an agent to provide the following services: jumper cables and assistance in using them; jacks, lug wrenches, tire sealant, or any other tools needed to repair or change a flat tire; a ride to and from the nearest gas station and a safe container to transport gas; and help in unlocking your vehicle (or in getting a locksmith) when you've locked your keys inside. Services are available between 7:00 a.m. Monday and 7:00 a.m. Saturday. They are not available on all-campus holidays or at any time the University is closed.

Safe Rides — Call 333-3184. Safe Rides is a free ride service provided by the Office of Women's Programs. It is available to all students every night that classes are in session.

Whistlestop — Call 333-7424. Whistlestop is a project of Volunteer Illini Projects designed to prevent crime (rape, robbery, arson, etc.) on campus and in surrounding areas. The Whistlestop program operates by use of high-pitched whistles which are used to attract attention to the scene of a crime and scare away an assailant. Whistles are available to students at the Volunteer Illini Projects office in 298B Illini Union

Student Health

McKinley Health Center — This Center serves the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Providing medical services and health education to a diverse student population has been the foundation of their service for over 75 years. Call 333-3263.

Health Resource Centers — In addition to treating students when they are ill, McKinley offers many services and programs for the campus at large. Health Resource Centers in McKinley and in the Illini Union (Room 323) offer cold packs, contraceptive packs, and information on health-related matters. McKinley services include not only the Medical Clinic, but also Urgent Care, Pharmacy, Immunization and Travel, Women's Health, Sports Medicine, and Wellness Promotion.

Student Health Insurance — The University's Board of Trustees requires that all students be covered by a health insurance plan, either the University's Student Health Insurance Plan or a plan determined by the University to be equivalent. Request for exemption from the health insurance fee, purchase of dependent coverage, etc., are limited to specific time periods at the beginning of each semester. Call 333-0165 for more information. Recreation

Writers' Workshop — The Writers' Workshop provides an opportunity for University of Illinois students, faculty, and staff from all disciplines and levels to discuss their writing with tutors who are both experienced writers and teachers of writing. Call 333-8796 for more information.

The Intramural-Physical Education Building (IMPE) — IMPE is located directly across Fourth Street from the College of Law. It contains four multi-purpose gymnasiums; indoor and outdoor swimming pools; racquetball, handball and squash courts; a running track; outdoor tennis courts; a first aid center; an outdoor information and equipment rental center; weight training and exercise rooms (including stairmasters, stationary bicycles, and rowing machines); a SCUBA air station; an archery room; a combat room; and locker, shower, and sauna facilities. Access to this and all other recreational buildings is allowed with your valid student I.D. Call 333-3806 for more information on services available.

The Assembly Hall — is known as one of the most versatile arenas in the nation. The Hall has 16,000 permanent seats and can accommodate from 3,600 in its theater quadrant to 17,000 for in-the-round performances. In addition to being the home of the Fighting Illini basketball teams, the Assembly Hall draws people from across Illinois for attractions such as the Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus, Ice Capades and the Harlem Globetrotters. Productions by national touring companies frequently appear at Assembly Hall, and it also features the top names in concerts and other entertainment. Campus Recreation Center East — Call 333-0218. This Center is located at 1102 W. Gregory, Urbana (adjacent to Freer Hall). Facilities include basketball and volleyball courts, fitness center (free weights, stair-masters, life cycles, rowing machines, etc.). This is a popular spot for law students because it is less crowded than IMPE, but still close by. There are no showers or lockers — please change before visiting the facility.

The University YMCA — This is an independent non-profit organization which sponsors programs open to all, regardless of gender, race, age, nationality, or religion. Programs and activities at the University YMCA are designed to provide a forum for exploration of social, political, and cultural issues; to provide opportunities to engage in volunteer community service; to foster international understanding; and to develop ethical, innovative, affirmative, and responsible leadership for creative social change. The YWCA of the University of Illinois — This organization is an interracial, not-for-profit established in 1884. It is now the oldest, continually-operating student YWCA in the United States. Throughout its history, the YWCA's commitment to women of various cultures and ethnicities, and those with low income has been reflected by our programs, participants, staff and board of directors. Call 344-0721.

Student Programs

The Office of International Student Affairs — This office works to assure that the international students enjoy full access to the opportunities available on campus. International Student Affairs offers counseling, programs, and support services starting the day international students arrive. Matters such as registration, finance, travel, and putting in a call home can be more complex for international students. This office seeks not only to smooth the transition to life at the University of Illinois but also to prepare students for the challenges after graduation. Call 333-1303 for more information.

The Office of Minority Student Affairs — This office coordinates the many programs and services offered to minority students on campus. Minority Student Affairs can provide personal counseling, academic counseling, tutoring, help in securing financial aid, help in finding a part-time campus job, computer training, and other useful services. Call 333-0054 for more information.

The Division of Rehabilitation Education — This division provides medical, rehabilitative, personal, and educational programs to University students with disabilities. Four Division of Rehabilitation Education buses operate on a regular schedule on campus; wheelchair ramps are on all Champaign-Urbana MTD buses. Students with disabilities who wish to request accommodations for any or all of their classes must make an appointment at DRES as soon as possible so the necessary forms can be completed. Student Legal Service — This office provides legal advice and, in many cases, representation to students. The staff consists of three attorneys, a secretary, and several interns. Any student who has not collected her/his $5 SORF refund is eligible to use Student Legal Service. If you want to make an appointment, visit the Student Legal Service office on the third floor of the Illini Union's north side. Call 333-9053 for more information.

Women's Programs — This office works to help women maximize their potential while at the University. This walk-in center is a clearinghouse for information on concerns to women, and it sponsors a variety of workshops and speakers throughout the year. Advising/counseling is available with an appointment. Call 333-3137 for more information.

Financial Aid

The Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) — Offers financial assistance to students; acts as a resource center for information on scholarships, grants, and campus employment opportunities; and administers Emergency Student Loans. Appointments with Financial Aid counselors are available; visit the office weekdays between 9 a.m. and noon or between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to schedule an appointment. If you are having difficulty resolving financial aid matters, the Assistant Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid can provide assistance. Call 333-0100 for more information.

Counseling

The Counseling Center — Offers services to help students cope with academic difficulties, alcohol and drug abuse, relationship problems, anxiety, depression, loneliness, and other personal difficulties. Trained professionals are available to work directly with students. The Counseling Center also offers workshops, videotapes on cable TV, courses through Reading and Study Methods Program, and self-help resources, particularly through the Undergraduate Library's Self-Help Information Center. The Counseling Center is located on the 2nd floor of the Student Services Building, 610 E. John. Same-day appointments are accepted on first-come, first-serve basis. Emergency Dean

The Emergency Dean — This is a service offered by the University Dean of Students office. A staff person is available to students in time of emergency 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Student Affairs staff members serve as Emergency Dean and to be on call evenings between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m., as well as on weekends (between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays, the Emergency Dean number is answered by the Dean of Students office). Emergency Deans provide any assistance that is needed to students, their families, roommates, and friends during times of crisis. Call 333-0050 for assistance.

Tenant Union

The Tenant Union — This office helps students who rent apartments or houses. Lease counseling, landlords' complaint histories, and help with problems such as repair needs, roommate disputes, and deposit refunds are among services provided. They also provide information on leases, finding local housing, tenant rights, and renters' insurance.
