"Equal Respect for Conscience: Roger Williams on the Moral Basis of Civil Peace"

Thursday, October 18 — 4 p.m.
Max L. Rowe Auditorium, Law Building
504 East Pennsylvania
Champaign

University of Chicago Professor Martha Nussbaum presents the 67th David C. Baum Lecture on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights dating to 1973. Professor Nussbaum’s lecture, “Equal Respect for Conscience: Roger Williams on the Moral Basis of Civil Peace” studies an important part of the American colonial tradition concerning religious toleration and respect: the Career and Writings of Roger Williams, founder of the colony of Rhode Island and writer about the persecuted conscience. Professor Nussbaum argues that Williams’ ideas of equal respect for conscience are very helpful in thinking about the foundations of religious toleration in a pluralistic society.

Professor Nussbaum is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics, appointed in the Philosophy Department, Law School and Divinity School. She is an Associate in the Classics Department and the Political Science Department, a Member of the Committee on Southern Asian Studies, and a Board Member of the Human Rights Program. She is the founder and Coordinator of the Center for Comparative Constitutionalism.

Free Admission. Public Welcome.
