Dean Kathleen M. Sullivan

Stanford Law School Professor and former Dean Kathleen M. Sullivan presents the 68th David C. Baum Lecture on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights Wednesday, March 12 at 4 p.m. in Max L. Rowe Auditorium. A reception will follow in the Peer and Sarah Pedersen Pavilion. Professor Sullivan's lecture is titled "Who is Free Speech For? Who is For Free Speech?." Professor Sullivan, the Stanley Morrison Professor of Law at Stanford, is a nationally prominent scholar and teacher of constitutional law. Author of the nation's leading casebook in constitutional law, she has published articles on federalism, religion, speech, equality, and constitutional theory. An outstanding litigator who has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, she served as the Dean of Stanford Law School from 1999-2004. Professor Sullivan was named one of "The 50 Most Influential Women in America" and "The 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America" by the National Law Journal. She is an Elected Member of the American Philosophical Society, an Elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was named "Attorney of the Year" by California Lawyer magazine.  She earned her B.A. from Cornell University, a B.A. at the University of Oxford, and her J.D. at Harvard Law School.

In 1973, the family and friends of Professor Baum endowed the David C. Baum Memorial Lecture Series on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights not only in his memory, but at his request. Deep concern for the dignity and rights of all people was central to Professor Baum's character and activities. The David C. Baum Memorial Lecture Series on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights is a fitting memorial to a man whose unrelenting intellectual vigor and moral commitment made his presence in the world of law invaluable.
