The Center on Law and Globalization is a joint project of The American Bar Foundation and the University of Illinois College of Law. Set up in 2007, the Center seeks to understand the legal and normative consequences of globalization through interdisciplinary research. Legal institutions are increasingly implicated in global governance as the role and power of international institutions expand and cross-border interactions intensify. The Center will examine the role of law in shaping and constraining globalization while contributing to the design of effective approaches to solving global legal problems. The Center will also examine the effects of law on target populations, on resources and capacity, and on broad cultural and political awareness.
Key Center constituencies are global and international civil servants both at inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations; opinion makers including journalists, academics, and analysts; and local officials and private parties who have not been traditionally recognized as part of the global structure of governance. The Center’s three thematic focus areas are: justice and security including human rights, economics and development, and health and well-being.
