College of Law, League of Women Voters release fourth annual Courtwatching Report
For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Illinois College of Law and the League of Women Voters collaborated on a lengthy study of Champaign County Courts and released the 2007-2008 Champaign County Courtwatching Report at a press conference at the Champaign County Courthouse last Thursday. Appearing at the press conference announcing the findings in the Jury Assembly Room were College of Law Professors Steve Beckett and C.K. Gunsalus, Illinois law students Austin Kaplan and Greg Rubio, who participated in the survey collection, Roger Holland, Court Administrator, and Joan Miller, Chair of the Justice Committee for the League of Women Voters. The Courtwatching Report received significant local print and electronic media coverage. The Courtwatching Report will be featured on “Illinois Law” on Sunday, May 11 at 10 a.m. on WCIA-TV.
The Courtwatching Report details observations from Courtroom proceedings from Fall 2007, collected by more than 90 College of Law Trial Advocacy students enrolled in “Law 695, Fundamentals of Trial Practice” and the League of Women Voters’ standing corps of observers. The extensive courtroom observations are then aggregated and analyzed for statistical significance. The full Courtwatching Project results are available online.
