AP Wire Story: Professor Fleischer on tax exemptions benefiting sovereign wealth funds

San Francisco Chronicle (from The Associated Press, March 6) -- U. of I. law professor Victor Fleischer said in an online posting this week that tax exemptions benefiting sovereign wealth funds – large pools of capital controlled by governments across Asia and the Middle East – may deserve a closer look by Congress. The AP dispatch appeared nationwide, in the United Kingdom and in Greece.

New York Times, Financial Week: Professor Fleischer on state-owned investment funds

Financial Week, New York Times (New York City, March 5) -- “There is no sound reason to unconditionally exempt state-owned investment funds from U.S. taxation,” says Victor Fleischer, a U. of I. law professor who believes sovereign wealth funds are getting an unfair tax advantage.

New York Times: Professor Lawless on monthly bankruptcy filing rates

The New York Times (March 5) -- “The monthly bankruptcy filing rate has a lot of cyclicality,” Robert M. Lawless, a professor of law at the University of Illinois College of Law, wrote on Tuesday on the widely read bankruptcy blog, Creditslips.org. Some experts, for example, say bankruptcies often seem to rise in February as debts from the holiday season come due. Even so, the trend is definitely upward, Professor Lawless wrote. States as disparate as Kentucky and Rhode Island joined the top 10 list, and the absolute number of filings rose significantly.

3L Josh Whitman to appear on WILL-AM 580’s “Afternoon Magazine” March 31

hird-year law student Josh Whitman will appear on “Afternoon Magazine” Monday, March 31 at 1 p.m. discussing the Mitchell Report and steroid usage in professional sports with host Jeff Bossert, Michael Schmidt, a sports reporter with the New York Times, and former major league all-star catcher Darrin Fletcher. Whitman’s article in the University of Illinois Law Review, “Winning at all Costs: Using Law & Economics to Determine the Proper Role of Government in Regulating the Use of Performance Enhancing Drugs in Professional Sports,” was awarded the 2006-2007 Best Note Award and was recently nominated by the College of Law for the Burton Award for Legal Achievement, a national legal writing award.
