Professor Morriss authors statewide Energy report for the 2008 Illinois Report for legislators
Professor Andrew Morriss, the H. Ross and Helen Workman Professor of Law and Business, authored a thorough examination of the energy situation in the state of Illinois, focusing primarily on gasoline prices and the cost of electricity. His chapter, Illinois’ Energy Outlook, is contained in the 2008 edition of The Illinois Report, an extensive survey of statewide issues intended to serve as an information aide for Illinois’ political leaders. The Illinois Report is produced by the Institute of Government and Public Affairs.

Bloomington Pantagraph: Professor Beckett on involuntary commitment law
The Pantagraph (Bloomington, Ill., Feb. 8) -- A new Illinois law that becomes effective this summer could provide earlier intervention to people with symptoms of illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. But, according to Steven Beckett, director of trial advocacy at the U. of I. College of Law, the new law must be closely monitored to avoid abuses by family members and others.

“Illinois Law” makes its Spring 2008 debut on Feb. 17 – “America’s Mortgage Crisis”
Professor Christine Hurt hosts “Illinois Law” Sunday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. on WCIA-TV on the topic of “America’s Mortgage Crisis.” The show was originally scheduled to air on Feb. 3 but has been rescheduled due to technical issues.
The show will feature Professor Robert Lawless, a leading authority on bankruptcy and consumer credit issues, and Professor Cynthea Geerdes, who oversees the College’s clinical education and community outreach programs, along with local realtor Jane Bernthal from Coldwell Banker Devonshire and local banker Jason Eyman from First Federal Savings Bank. Be sure and tune in (or DVR it!) on Sunday at 10 a.m. on WCIA-TV Channel 3. This will be the 27th “Illinois Law” program since its debut on WCIA in February, 2006, a great partnership between the College of Law and WCIA-TV. Professor Hurt is pinch-hitting for Professor Amy Gajda during the Spring, 2008 semester as Professor Gajda is in New York City serving as a visiting professor at Brooklyn Law School.

Toronto Star: Professor Boyle on Manley Report and former Prime Minister Lester Pearson
The Star (Toronto, Feb. 5) -- U. of I. law professor Francis Boyle says that he's made his students study the U.N. peacekeeping model devised by Lester Pearson, prime minister of Canada from 1963 to 1968, for the Suez Crisis of 1956. "It was the first, and the model for all that came after it ... Pearson richly deserved his Nobel peace Prize."
