The Legal English Program is an intensive three-week certificate program
designed for non-native speakers of English who have been admitted to an LL.M. program
or as a Law School visiting scholar for Fall 2008. This program offers 72 hours of
instruction over three weeks. Fifty-four hours of that time will be spent improving
students' proficiency in English generally, with special focus on developing the
English language, vocabulary, and academic skills required to succeed in an
American law school. Students will also receive 18 hours of instruction in fundamentals
of the United States legal system and the study of law in the U.S.

Students will receive 18 hours of instruction in fundamentals
of the United States legal system and the study of law in the U.S. This portion of
the course will introduce methods of instruction common in American legal education,
including case study and the Socratic method. Through these instructional methods,
as well as lectures and group discussions, students will investigate three
fundamental aspects of U.S. law: federalism, constitutionalism and the common law system.
Students will develop their abilities to analyze legal issues as they arise in the U.S.
legal system and to communicate their legal analyses in a manner consistent with the
expectations of the U.S. legal culture.
Courses focus on giving students the skills needed to succeed
in an English-speaking legal environment, with specific focus on oral presentations,
academic listening, writing, and legal vocabulary.
-
Reading and Writing: The reading and writing course focuses on detailed, close reading of cases that are used in the discussion of the US legal system class. The writing assignments consist of writing summaries of cases in clear and grammatically accurate English. Please note that this course helps prepare general English language skills for students who will be attending law school. It does not teach skills such as contract writing, which are taught in the writing courses within the LLM degree program.
-
Listening and Speaking: The listening foci of the course are on listening to the language of coutroom settings and notetaking from short lectures on legal topics. Speaking assignments include managing discussions and debate and the performance of a simulated ('mock') trial in order to provide students with practice using English on their feet while handling legal topics.
