Externship

In addition to Clinical Programs within the College, Externships expose students to practical aspects of lawyering by allowing them to earn academic credit for performing legal work without compensation for approved non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, or judges. Students work under the direct supervision of an attorney and complete assignments such as interviewing clients and witnesses; researching legal questions; preparing pleadings, discovery motions, and briefs; and, in some instances, trying cases.

Virtually all participating students report that their externship experiences are among the most valuable of their legal education. These experiences allow students to apply classroom learning to the real world, and offer opportunities for personal growth and development. Students can explore career interests while providing valuable service to others.

Students also recognize that employers value the experience that working with outside agencies provides. In addition, they network with other legal professionals, including potential employers and future references.
