Law 794: International Business Transactions: Hong Kong and Macau

This is a combined classroom and field experience designed to provide a foundation for the examination of the business strategies used in doing business in China through Hong Kong and Macau and related policy issues. The course will provide introductory knowledge and concepts to students so that, as part of their legal practice, they will be able to assist clients in creating and using business entities in Hong Kong and Macau. The course will include discussion of the history of both Special Administrative Regions, the roles they have historically played in the China trade, and how their status is used today by outside investors as well as by Chinese investors.  In particular, the course will focus on the hybrid nature of the two S.A.R.s'  legal systems, which combine elements of English common law and Chinese law (Hong Kong) and civil law and Chinese law (Macau). Most importantly, students will have the opportunity to meet and interact with professionals and policy-makers from both jurisdictions during the field portion of the class. The field trip will take place over winter break.

Sequence and Prerequisites:  Business Associations I is a prerequisite. Concurrent enrollment will be permitted.  Please note: This course differs entirely from Law 794: International Business Organizations: The Cayman Islands and so students may register for both.
