Law 795: International Criminal Court
The purpose of this course is to give students a comprehensive overview of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and discuss the various issues on the Court. The ICC Statute was created at the United Nations Diplomatic Conference in Rome, Italy (Rome Conference) on 17 July 1998. The ICC Statute entered into force on 1 July 2002 and the ICC established in the Hague, the Netherlands and began to operate in 2003. While the ICC has 100 States Parties now, the United States opposed the ICC arguing the ICC Statute violates the international law, in particular, the law of treaties since it imposed an obligation upon a non-State Party.
By taking this course, students may be able to understand the general norms and principles of the ICC and various controversial issues regarding the ICC and international law. Moreover, this course would be helpful to students who want to practice as international criminal lawyer working before the ICC and other international criminal courts.
