Law 796: European Union: Europe-U.S. Relations
This seminar provides students with an opportunity to study the European Union (EU) and transatlantic relations and to introduce to their research a perspective informed by EU policy. It surveys the history and institutions of the EU and explores some of the key issues for regional trading blocs: enlargement, accountability and legitimacy, regulatory policy and security.
The seminar is interdisciplinary. Some class sessions will feature a guest presentation from an outside scholar, who represents one of a range of disciplines. This breadth reflects the nature of EU studies and should enrich students' own disciplinary scholarship. All students are encouraged to participate actively in seminar meetings.
Assignments: Students must write two short policy papers (5 pages and 10 pages) on European Union or transatlantic relations - the first will be assigned, while the subject of the second paper should be discussed with the seminar leader. All papers must be submitted by the end of classes. A take-home essay exam will be held towards the end of the semester to test the students' comprehension of the class material.
Sequence and Prerequisites: None.
