Law 794: Real Estate Development
This course is conducted in a clinical format for 12 students. The course takes a "hands-on" approach to developing a parcel of land. Students will be involved in all phases of the development, including negotiating the options for acquisition; meeting with the City to examine its Comprehensive Plan and zoning issues; meeting with the County to determine any intergovernmental disputes; meeting with a prominent engineer to study infrastructure issues involving the City as well as design issues for the tract; working with an architect if possible; studying market needs and growth patterns; meeting with a contractor to negotiate a contract as well as cost issues; and studying whether the project is worthwhile. The legal issues are multiple at each phase and would involve drafting as well as negotiating and coordinating techniques.
Sequence and Prerequisites: Either Real Estate Transactions (Law 623) as a prerequisite, OR Real Estate Finance (Law 624) as a prerequisite or co-requisite.
